5 Effective Tips for Keeping Your New Year’s Resolutions

5 Effective Tips for Keeping Your New Year’s Resolutions

We’re a few weeks into January and those New Year’s Eve celebrations seem like a distant memory.

You’ve just about managed to overcome those ‘going back to work’ blues and you’re starting to find your stride again. You deserve a lot of credit for that - it’s not as easy as it looks!

Despite what many self-help writers and gurus may say, it’s tough to get going again once you’ve enjoyed a break from the norm.

Furthermore, it can be difficult to keep those well intentioned New Year’s resolutions you made over the holidays.

Whether you’re focused on improving your fitness, eating more healthily, spending more time with your loved ones or devoting more time to a hobby, life has a way of interfering with these plans if we allow it to.

Here at Click & Grow, however, we believe you deserve to the take the opportunities in front of you. There’s no reason why you can’t make this year your most rewarding one yet.

With that in mind, here are a few tips to help you keep your New Year’s resolutions...

1. Set ambitious yet realistic goals

Perhaps your New Year’s resolution was to improve your fitness. It’s important to realize you may not see drastic results within your first few days of training. Even professional athletes require several weeks or even months to achieve the fitness levels they desire.

Small steps, however, can lead to great results. If you’re a fitness beginner, start by going for a walk each day. Even taking a 15 minute stroll is an improvement upon complete idleness.

Once you’re comfortable with that, perhaps start jogging rather than walking. By taking things easy at first, you’re less likely to become discouraged and give up on your resolution altogether.

2. Be open to support from friends and family

Sticking to your resolutions is difficult even at the best of times. Doing it all alone, however, can make it even more of an uphill battle. Why not ask your friends and family to support you in your journey?

With strong, emotional support behind you, keeping your resolutions can be a more rewarding experience. When you’re having a bad day, talk to your loved ones about it and let them encourage you to keep going. Sometimes it takes other people to explain to us just how far we’ve come.

3. Write down your promises to yourself

Drawing up a manifesto that lists your goals can really help when it comes to keeping focus. The old adage ‘out of sight, out of mind’ still rings true. If we’re not regularly reminded of our goals, it becomes easier to forget them.

Sticking your manifesto on your fridge or on your wall will help you keep sight of what you’re aiming for every day.

4. Forgive yourself and carry on

Very often people abandon their resolutions at the first stumbling block. When you encounter setbacks, it’s important not to be too hard on yourself. Remind yourself that it’s not easy to achieve your resolutions and mistakes are bound to be made. What really counts is how you bounce back.

If you fall behind in keeping one of your resolutions, forgive yourself and soldier on. Tell yourself that the best is yet to come.

5. Reward yourself for achieving your goals

New Year’s resolutions shouldn’t be all work and no play. Milestones should be celebrated. You deserve it.

Rewards can inspire us to keep persisting with our resolutions. They help us recognize our progress and that we have something to celebrate.

We often think of a reward as a guilty pleasure but it doesn’t have to be that way. It’s not just about having an extra portion of your favorite dessert. A reward could even be setting aside more time for yourself or doing something fun with your loved ones. It’s your reward and your choice.

Keeping your New Year’s resolutions doesn’t have to be an arduous task. By taking small steps, motivating yourself can turn out to be a positive, worthwhile experience. It could even draw you closer to your loved ones if you involve them in the process.

Perhaps the biggest aspect of this is how your sense of self-worth will be boosted. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of achievement that awaits you.

So, keep going… We’re rooting for you!
