LKA Game-Day Ready Tostadas | The Snack Kids Can Make Again on Their Own

At home, recipes like this create the moments you'll remember: when your child walks into the kitchen, gathers ingredients, and starts preparing something for themselves without being asked. That's when cooking becomes more than a skill... it becomes confidence.

Ingredients

  • 2 small corn tortillas
  • 1/2 small ripe avocado
  • 1/4 small lime, juiced
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp pepper
  • 1/8 tsp cumin
  • 4-5 fresh sprigs cilantro, chopped
  • 2 tbsp sour cream
  • Pinch of chili powder
  • 1/4 cup pinto beans, drained
  • 3-4 cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 20 g feta cheese, crumbled
  • 1 green onion, thinly sliced

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 375°F.

Learning to work safely around heat is an important step toward kitchen independence. Invite your child to observe the process and discuss why we use the oven for certain foods and not others.

2. Bake the Tortillas

Place the corn tortillas on a lined baking tray and lightly coat both sides with oil. Bake for 8-10 minutes until golden brown and crispy.

3. Make the Avocado Spread

In a small bowl, combine the avocado, lime juice, salt, pepper, and cumin. Mash until smooth and well combined.

💡 At Home Tip: Mashing is purposeful work. It strengthens hand muscles, develops coordination, and helps children see how individual ingredients can be transformed into something entirely new.

4. Create the Chili Cream

Mix the chili powder into the sour cream until evenly combined.

Encourage your child to smell the chili powder before mixing. Exploring ingredients through sight, smell, touch, and taste helps children become more curious and confident in the kitchen.

5. Assemble the Tostadas

Place the crispy tortillas on a plate. Spread the avocado mixture evenly over each tortilla.

Sprinkle the chopped cilantro over the avocado layer, then spread the chili sour cream on top.

6. Add the Toppings

Top each tostada with pinto beans, cherry tomatoes, and crumbled feta cheese. Finish with a garnish of sliced green onions.

7. Serve and Enjoy

Before taking the first bite, take a moment to admire the finished dish together.

Ask your child what they're most proud of. Was it baking the tortillas? Mashing the avocado? Building the final tostada? Reflection helps children recognize their own growth and capability.
