10 Easy Tips for a Greener Home

10 Easy Tips for a Greener Home

What is green living?

Green living is a lifestyle that does everything it can to ensure there is balance between the conservation and preservation of Earth's natural resources. This also includes earth’s habitats and biodiversity with human culture and communities.

As a company, we believe everyone deserves to enjoy a cleaner, more balanced diet through sustainable food production. Looking at the wider picture, the concept of green living is one that inspires us greatly. With that in mind, we put together a list of our favorite, practical tips for a greener home:

1) Grow plants indoors

There are so many health benefits to growing houseplants An often overlooked benefit is that plants can act as natural air filters. Basil, for instance, can help to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in your home.

2) Switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs

These bulbs use considerably less electricity and often last much longer than regular bulbs.

3) Turn off the lights

Remember to switch off the lights before leaving the room. If viable, consider installing automatic light timers.

4) Unplug

Unplug electronic appliances when they are not in use. Even devices on standby mode can consume a lot of energy over time.

5) Use cloths rather than cleaners

Instead of using cleaning products which contain a whole host of chemicals, switch to microfiber cloths which are designed to attract dirt by themselves.

6) Opt for recycled products

When browsing for certain products in the store, such as writing paper, it’s worth checking the labels. Select products with the highest amount of post-consumer recycled content.

7) Use durable goods

Use reusable food containers rather than plastic wrap. Similarly, use rechargeable batteries rather than single-use ones and use reusable razors rather than disposable ones.

8) Fill the sink when doing the dishes

To save water, fill the sink rather than letting the tap run. Make use of a double sink if you have one or use a separate tub for rinsing.

9) Use a clothesline

If at all possible, dry your clothes on a clothesline rather than using a dryer. Dryers can be very energy hungry. Even a new dryer can consume as much combined electricity as a clothes washer, refrigerator, and dishwasher.

10) Leave shoes at the door

In a sense, removing your shoes when entering a home is like washing your hands. It’s easy and it prevents outside dirt, chemicals and pesticides from being spread across the house.

These are just a few of our favorite tips. There are plenty more which can be applied when looking to create a greener home.

When thinking of how to go green at home it’s encouraging to know that the task need not be difficult.

"... you don't necessarily need extra time or money, or the powers of a superhero, to do your part to look after the planet.”, writes Joanna Yarrow, author of 1,001 Ways to Save the Earth. “Pretty much everything we do has an impact on the natural world.”

There are opportunities all around us to look after our planet. Let’s seek out these opportunities as we aim to create greener homes for ourselves and our loved ones.
